Multiple sources have told Rand Getlin of Yahoo Sports that the Buffalo Bills are eyeing a trade for St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford, who was the No. 1 pick of the 2010 NFL draft but has been beset by injuries throughout his career.
The Bills had a standout defense but a blah offense last season: Only two NFL teams — the Jaguars and the Raiders — averaged fewer yards per play than the Bills’ 5.0. According to Getlin, new Buffalo coach Rex Ryan isn’t sold on quarterback EJ Manuel, who threw for five touchdowns and three interceptions last season before getting replaced by the since-retired Kyle Orton.
Bradford hasn’t completed a full season since 2012. He missed all of 2014 after tearing his left ACL in a preseason game and suffered the same injury midway through the 2013 season, missing the final nine games. Bradford also missed six games in 2011 because of a high-ankle sprain.
As Getlin notes, the Bills don’t have much in the way of draft picks to offer the Rams in trade this year. They sent their No. 1 pick in this year’s draft to the Cleveland Browns to move up and take Sammy Watkins last year, and have just six picks total.
Rams Coach Jeff Fisher, meanwhile, said at the NFL combine that Bradford would be the team’s quarterback for this season, though the team reportedly has given Bradford permission to seek a trade, Getlin reports. Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News and Mike Rodak of ESPN.com both report that the trade is unlikely to happen.
Meanwhile, running back C.J. Spiller, who will become a free agent next month, told SiriusXM Radio on Tuesday that he could possibly return to the Bills, even though GM Doug Whaley said last week that the two sides were somewhat far apart in their demands.
As transcribed by Pro Football Talk, it sounds as if Spiller wants to stay in Buffalo.
“There’s a possibility that I could be in a Bills uniform,” Spiller said. “We never know how this situation is going to play out. The organization knows that I want to be there, so pretty much the ball is in their court. At the same time we’re going to weigh all our options and see what best suits me. The biggest thing is you want to go somewhere where you’re wanted. That’s the biggest thing. That’s pretty much how I’m approaching this thing. I’m looking forward to it.”
Spiller broke his collarbone and played in only nine games last season as the Bills rushed for only 1,482 yards as a team, a franchise low for a 16-game season.
