NFL Draft 2015: Latest Mock Draft After Opening Days of Free Agency

Free agency took what many expected to happen in the 2015 NFL draft and turned it on its head, with many NFL teams' biggest needs being answered in the open market throughout the opening few days.

The league's new year is only a couple of days old, but some of the league's biggest names have already seen changes of scenery, and surprise moves have appeared in droves. While not much has happened to change some of the picks at the very top, plenty of teams have seen their draft focus shift recently.

With that said, let's take a look at how the first round of the draft should shake out.

1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: QB Jameis Winston, FSU

The beginning of the free-agency cycle proved to be quiet in Tampa Bay, which is likely just how the Buccaneers would have liked it. They've long been set on adding a franchise quarterback to a young offensive nucleus, and the time is finally arriving to do so.

For what Tampa Bay covets, there's no better fit than Jameis Winston.

The Florida State quarterback has the total package of a strong, accurate arm along with in-pocket awareness and an intelligence to both sniff out coverages and take advantage of their weaknesses. Few quarterback skill sets have been as polished coming out of school, most of which are in the midst of incredible careers.

The biggest speed bump for prospective NFL teams has always been his maturity level, but even that is taking big strides in the predraft process. ESPN's Darren Rovell uncovered that Winston not only deleted his Twitter account, but he also met with the league commissioner:

The emergence of Oregon's Marcus Mariota may have made it a two-horse race for the top spot in the draft, and it should turn out that both have strong careers. But you don't pick a quarterback at No. 1 overall unless you're sold on him, and Winston's stock is the easiest one to sell at the moment.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars: DE/OLB Dante Fowler, Florida

David J. Phillip/Associated Press

The Jacksonville Jaguars are still a few stud players away from truly turning the corner, so why not look in-state when one of the draft's top prospects hails from the University of Florida?

Of course, Dante Fowler possesses much more than just a home-state feel. The 6'3", 261-pound menace is a dominant edge-rusher and run-stuffer, racking up 15 tackles for loss and 17 quarterback hurries during his final season with the Gators.

In a class that boasts a number of elite edge-rushers, Fowler may be the best, per Bleacher Report's Matt Miller:

Jacksonville has been associated as one of the league's worst teams over recent history and justifiably so, but the Jags defense actually took a surprise turn for the better in 2014. The 45 team sacks ranked sixth in the NFL, with most of the danger coming from the interior rather than the edge.

But those days without an impact off the edge will be over and done with if the Jaguars take Fowler at No. 3 overall. It's picks like this that get a team like Jacksonville away from the top five of the draft in the future, and this could be the selection that finally puts the Jags over the hump and allows for some real improvement.

10. St. Louis Rams: WR Kevin White, West Virginia

Julio Cortez/Associated Press

Former No. 1 overall pick in quarterback Sam Bradford might be gone, but recently acquired gunslinger Nick Foles is going to need better options in the passing game. After having his fair share of weapons in Philadelphia, he's entering a Rams team awfully shaky at the skill positions.

Now that head coach Jeff Fisher has somewhat of an idea of how his team's offense is going to look, he can take the next step by giving Foles his very own go-to receiver in West Virginia's Kevin White.

The Rams attempted to bring in a game-changer with the eighth overall pick of Tavon Austin in the 2013 draft, a selection that hasn't exactly paid off. But while Austin emerged in a relatively weak receiving class, White has emerged as a serious candidate to be drafted ahead of Alabama receiver Amari Cooper.

Foles won't be able to get very far in St. Louis without the Rams addressing their need at the skill position, but it's not really a big one. Plug in a player of White's caliber alongside Austin and Kenny Britt, and the Rams could have a much more potent offense in 2015.

Henry Melton to Buccaneers: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Henry Melton to Buccaneers: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Ronald Martinez/Getty Images

Following a one-year stint with the Dallas Cowboys, defensive tackle Henry Melton latched on with a new team Thursday, as he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

According to Melton's agent, Jordan Woy, Melton signed with the Buccaneers:

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported the deal was for one year.

Melton signed a contract with the Cowboys last offseason after four years with the Chicago Bears. It was a one-year pact with three option years, but Dallas opted to decline the option on Feb. 14, per Brandon George of The Dallas Morning News:

It was a cost-cutting move on the Cowboys' part, as they saved $9 million by allowing Melton to hit free agency:

Ultimately, the former University of Texas standout didn't live up to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' lofty expectations, according to George:

I think we all had hoped from the day that he got there and OTAs that he would be at Pro Bowl form. That was probably unrealistic but that's a goal. As he went on through the season, he evolved and improved. He had a setback or two that I would call nicks, probably impacted his overall steady progression to get back to where he was that year in Chicago before he got hurt. But in general, I did see progress with how he rehabbed from his injury.

While Melton didn't play at the level he had maintained as a Pro Bowl selection in 2012, he was quite impressive considering he had missed most of the 2013 campaign with a torn ACL.

Melton finished the 2014 season with just 15 tackles, but he registered five sacks, which helped him rate among the best pass-rushing defensive tackles in the NFL, per Pete Damilatis of Pro Football Focus:

The fact that he maintained his ability to pressure the quarterback was a positive sign, but it is understandable that the Cowboys felt they couldn't make a long-term investment in him.

Dallas entered the offseason needing to upgrade its defense in order to take the next step toward becoming an elite team. It could be argued that letting Melton go was a setback, but the unit wasn't good enough with or without his services.

Melton proved in 2014 that he still has value, though, even if it was just in a situational pass-rush role. Because of that, it isn't surprising he has found a new landing spot.

The former fourth-round pick is in his prime, and there is reason to believe he'll be even better in 2015 now that he is another year removed from the ACL tear.

Chris Conte to Buccaneers: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Chris Conte to Buccaneers: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reportedly reached a deal with free-agent safety Chris Conte. It's a one-year deal. Financial details weren't immediately released.

Vaughn McClure of ESPN passed along word of the signing:

Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times confirmed a deal was in place:

The Chicago Bears used a third-round pick to select Conte in the 2011 draft. The free safety appeared in 57 games, racking up over 230 tackles along with 21 passes defended and nine interceptions. He's an average option at the back end of the secondary.

There are still questions to answer for Tampa Bay, though. It's reportedly set to release Dashon Goldson to pave the way for Conte's arrival. Whether the new signing will end up sliding into the starting lineup might not be known until training camp.

The Bucs have both Major Wright and Bradley McDougald on the roster. The team could end up holding a competition during the preseason to fill the two roles. That is unless Conte was told prior to signing that he'd be a starter.

Having too many options is better than being short, though. Conte gives the Buccaneers some depth without having to invest in a long-term deal.

NFL Rumors: Breaking Down Free Agent and Trade Buzz on Key Targets

NFL Rumors: Breaking Down Free Agent and Trade Buzz on Key Targets

Tom Pennington/Getty Images

The initial frenzy that always occurs when the new NFL league year gets underway is starting to fade. A lot of players have found new homes, and now things are starting to become more deliberate as the remaining targets survey the new landscape.

Running back is one position where plenty of movement is still to come. A lot has been made about the changed outlook for teams around the league in the backfield. The urge to give players at the position lucrative long-term deals isn't as strong these days.

That said, the impact that the good ones can make is still incredibly big. That makes it interesting to see how the market plays out. So let's check out some of the latest rumors involving running backs available either through free agency or a trade.

DeMarco Murray

The Dallas Cowboys finally committed to the running game last season. Murray responded by rushing for over 1,800 yards and 13 touchdowns. It's hard to believe the team would willingly allow that successful partnership to end, but the interest elsewhere is picking up.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports the dynamic back is heading to meet with the Philadelphia Eagles brass Thursday:

His ESPN colleague, Adam Caplan, notes the interest from Philadelphia is legitimate:

The Eagles have undergone some major changes already this offseason. One of the moves was reaching a deal with running back Ryan Mathews. Adding Murray to create a high-upside duo would create plenty of options for Chip Kelly.

Losing Murray is one thing. Watching him walk into the hands of a division rival would be a major setback for the Cowboys and put pressure on them to find a top-tier replacement. Whether that will force their hand into offering him a better deal to stay remains to be seen.

Adrian Peterson

Peterson and the Vikings have held recent talks to discuss his future with the organization. The running back wasn't prepared to provide details of the meetings or speculate about the next step, telling Ben Goessling of ESPN, "I'm just waiting to see what happens."

If the sides determine it's best to go their separate ways, the trade talk will likely heat up. Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports reports Peterson is willing to restructure his contract to make a deal work and has multiple possible landing spots in mind:

While the Dallas Cowboys have been reported to be a Peterson favorite destination, the running back prefers five teams: the Arizona Cardinals, the Indianapolis Colts, the Cowboys, the San Diego Chargers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That said, even if Peterson requested a trade, the Vikings could refuse and simply pay him the $12.75 million in base salary he's due in the 2015 season.

Which of these RBs has the most upside for 2015?

Which of these RBs has the most upside for 2015?

  • DeMarco Murray

  • Adrian Peterson

  • C.J. Spiller

The Cowboys obviously stand out from the list given the Murray situation. If they lose him and are able to bring in Peterson as a replacement, an offensive drop-off becomes less of a concern. They certainly don't want to put too much pressure on Tony Romo again. A balanced attack worked far better.

Indianapolis has signed Frank Gore since the report came out. Otherwise, the other potential fits are still in need of an upgrade at the position. The Cardinals are an interesting alternative with a solid aerial attack already in place. Peterson could take the offense to the next level.

C.J. Spiller

Rick Stewart/Getty Images

Spiller is an interesting case. He's one of the league's most explosive rushers when healthy. He played just nine games last season and didn't look like his usual dangerous self when he did play, though. The Clemson product averaged less than four yards per carry.

Signing him to fill a void at running back would come with some clear risk. That said, the reward if he returns to full strength could be worth taking the chance. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports the New Orleans Saints are interested:

The Saints represent an ideal situation for Spiller. They already have a punishing back in Mark Ingram. So he could assume a moderate workload to increase his chances of staying healthy. He would also be a nice weapon in the passing game.

If that doesn't work out, Rapoport notes the Cowboys are a presence once again. Dallas would probably need more depth at the position if it wants to take a chance on Spiller as its starter. But it's clear the Cowboys are keeping all options open at this point.

Manny Pacquiao stopped by ESPN’s “His & Hers” on Wednesday to talk about his upcoming bout with Floyd Mayweather, and he said nothing inflammatory at all.

Ha, no.

“Do you think she could beat Floyd in MMA?” co-host Jemele Hill asked, referring to the oft-talked-about subject of whether Rousey could beat a man in a mixed-martial-arts fight.

“I believe so. She’s strong, and she’s strong enough to beat Floyd Mayweather in MMA,” Pacquiao replied.

Only 52 more days of this until Pacquiao and Mayweather actually get into the ring.

The first and only press conference featuring Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. was held Wednesday and — hey, Justin Bieber, what are you doing there???

Shortly after the two boxers promised a fight (and a payday) for the ages, the pop star, who often hangs around with Mayweather, inexplicably stepped up to video/photo bomb the fighters, along with trainer Freddie Roach and promoter Bob Arum.

It was quite a spectacle.

While Bieber and Money exchanged bro-hugs, Pacquiao just kind of stood there, perhaps reminding himself just how much he is being paid to endure this.

The big fight, of course, is May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and you know the Biebs will be there.

NFL Free Agency 2015: Grades for Wednesday Signings and Trades

Tony Gutierrez/Associated Press

They say that the waiting is the hardest part.

Well, Tom Petty said it, anyway.

Fans of the Miami Dolphins were singing along with Petty Tuesday. Despite a contract agreement that may have been a little too ironed out for the NFL's liking, the first day of free agency 2015 came and went without defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh signing on the dotted line.

Well relax, Miami fans. It's done, and for better or worse Suh is now the NFL's highest-paid defensive player.

Wednesday didn't begin with the blaze of trading glory that helped make Tuesday one of the wonkier days in recent memory in the NFL, but there was no shortage of wheeling and dealing across the NFL.

Here's a look back at Wednesday's biggest signings, beginning with that jaw-dropper of deal in Miami.

Looking for grades for Tuesday's deals? They're right here.

Ndamukong Suh to Dolphins: 6 Years, $114 Million, $60 Million Guaranteed

USA TODAY Sports

There are deals. Then there are mega-deals. Then there's the contract that Ndamukong Suh signed with the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday.

It's Dealzilla. It eats mega-deals like Toaster Strudel.

Suh's new contract doesn't make him the NFL's highest-paid defensive tackle (by a mile) or the league's highest-paid defender. As Grantland's Bill Barnwell reports, the $60 million Suh will receive over the first three years of the deal puts the 28-year-old on par with the NFL's elite quarterbacks.

According to James Walker of ESPN, Suh was (to no one's surprise) all smiles with a pen in his hand on Wednesday.

"Today's going to be a great day," Suh said, "and there's many more to come after that,"

No one's going to deny that Suh is an incredibly talented and disruptive defender. Or that he's a generational talent.

But, as Barnwell wrote, paying any one player (who isn't the quarterback) that obscene amount of money is going to have a ripple effect across the entire Miami roster:

In a vacuum, Suh is a colossus who would make any team better. In this reality, the impact of adding Suh could be countered by how his contract leaves the Dolphins pencil-thin at three or four other spots on defense. Maybe the Dolphins will nail the 2015 draft and come away with two above-average starters in the secondary. Maybe they’ll find that Davis or Taylor will take a leap forward, Suh will make the linebackers look good, and everyone will stay healthy. More likely is that the addition of Suh will be mitigated by how it handicaps Miami elsewhere.

Suh is indeed a great player, but the very real possibility that Suh's Dealzilla cripples the Dolphins' ability to add around him knocks a fair bit of the shine off this acquisition.

Good luck telling Dolphins fans that though. They're riding the wave that Suh's splash created.

Pernell McPhee to Bears: 5 Years, $40 Million, $16 Million Guaranteed

Pernell McPhee to Bears: 5 Years, $40 Million, $16 Million Guaranteed

USA TODAY Sports

This was another signing that was rumored to have been all but completed over the weekend, only to see Tuesday come and go without the deal getting done.

Still, outside linebacker Pernell McPhee flew into Chicago late Tuesday, and as Larry Meyer of the team's website reports by Wednesday McPhee had signed a five-year, $40 million contract with the Bears.

It continues a defensive overhaul that began almost as soon as Ryan Pace took over as Chicago's general manager back in January. “When you think about the Bears’ identity over the years,” Pace told Meyer at the time, “it’s tough, physical defense, and we’re going to get back to that.”

The Bears are making the switch to a 3-4 defensive front under new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. In the opinion of Doug Farrar of Sports Illustrated , the versatility McPhee displayed last year with the Baltimore Ravens will come in quite handy in that regard:

McPhee is able to create pressure and stop the run from just about any gap—he's become one of the most versatile defenders in the NFL. According to Pro Football Focus's metrics, McPhee rushed the passer 75 times in 372 total passing snaps from the standard outside linebacker position; he also played 115 snaps as a defensive end on either side of the formation with his hand on the ground and 120 snaps came from other linebacker positions. In addition, McPhee rushed occasionally from a three-tech and one-tech defensive tackle positions or gaps, with a stand-up stance and with his hand on the ground.

Farrar has a point. In McPhee's breakout 2014 season (in which the 26-year-old notched a career-high 7.5 sacks) only Justin Houston of the Kansas City Chiefs received a higher grade among 3-4 outside linebackers at PFF.

With that said though, we are talking about a player with 17 career sacks over four years, $40 million is hardly chicken feed and the recent track record of ex-Ravens after landing lucrative free-agent deals isn't especially good.

Looking at you, Paul Kruger. Looking right...at...you.

Ryan Mathews to Eagles, 3 Years, $11.5 Million, $5 Million Guaranteed

Ryan Mathews to Eagles, 3 Years, $11.5 Million, $5 Million Guaranteed

USA TODAY Sports

Like we were going to make it through one of these without the Chipster making a move.

The latest machination from MachiaKelly (that's GOLD, Jerry! GOLD!) got the Eagles their running back — it just wasn't the one we thought it would be a few days ago.

After Frank Gore spurned the Eagles for the Indianapolis Colts, the team moved on in their search for a replacement for LeSean McCoy.

As ESPN reported, on Wednesday the Eagles agreed to terms with free-agent running back Ryan Mathews on a three-year, $11.5 million contract. $5 million of the deal is guaranteed.

When healthy, the 12th overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft has been effective in the NFL. Two years ago Mathews topped 1,250 yards on the ground for the San Diego Chargers. Mathews has averaged at least 4.4 yards a carry in each of the past two seasons.

The problem is that "when healthy" part.

Only once in five NFL seasons has Matthews played in all 16 games. Three times he's missed at least one quarter of the season, including nine games a year ago.

The talent's there, and the financial investment is reasonable. However, counting on Mathews to be the Ragles' featured back in 2014 could be asking for trouble.

Of course, if the last few days are any indication, if there's one thing Chip Kelly isn't it's scared.

Jeremy Maclin to Chiefs: 5 Years, $55 Million, $22.5 Million Guaranteed

Jeremy Maclin to Chiefs: 5 Years, $55 Million, $22.5 Million Guaranteed

USA TODAY Sports

The times they are-a-changin' in Philadelphia.

It isn't just the dizzying array of moves that Kelly is made. Just like every other team in the NFL, the Eagles have also watched players depart for other teams.

And on Wednesday the Eagles suffered a loss that cut particularly deep.

As ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, who led the Eagles with 1,328 receiving yards in 2014, has joined the Kansas City Chiefs on a five-year, $55 million contract.

The deal, which includes $22.5 million in guarantees, reunites Maclin with head coach Andy Reid. Maclin told reporters (via Pete Sweeney of the Chiefs' website) that reunion played a large role in his decision-making.

In the back of my mind it was either I was going stay in Philadelphia or come to Kansas City. Both of those situations made sense and Kansas City made more sense. It’s going to be fun. I think the more the better, to have different types of guys who do different things and take the pressure off of each other. I think we are going to be pretty good on the offensive side of the ball.

After a season in which Kansas City wideouts caught a grand total of zero touchdown passes (how is that even possible?) it's hardly a surprise that position would be near the top of the Chiefs' wishlist.

And at 26 Maclin is in the prime of career coming off a career season. Reid called him "a phenomenal player."

However, last year was also the first time Maclin has topped 1,000 yards in a season. It's the only the second time in six years he's played 16 games, including losing the entire 2013 season to a torn ACL.

Not really a resume that yells "Pay me like a top-five receiver!"

Like the player. The terms? Not so much.

Andre Johnson to Colts: 3 Years, $21 Million

Andre Johnson to Colts: 3 Years, $21 Million

USA TODAY Sports

Man, the Colts really do like their free agents, um, experienced.

One day after inking running back Frank Gore and outside linebacker Trent Cole, the Colts once again went the geriatric route in free agency.

As ESPN's Josina Anderson reported, Indianapolis agreed to contract terms Wednesday on a three-year, $21 deal with veteran wide receiver Andre Johnson.

The 34-year-old Johnson, who has played all 12 of his NFL seasons with the Houston Texans, told ESPN his reasoning for joining Houston's rival was simple.

"I felt like this was the best place where I can win a championship and help win a championship," Johnson said. "That's what it's all about. That's why we play the game."

It's a worst-case scenario for Houston fans, who will now watch one of the best players in franchise history suit up for "the enemy."

However, Bleacher Report NFL National Lead Writer Matt Bowen hailed the move for the Colts:

At this point in his career, Johnson isn’t going to create a lot separation at the top of the route, and I do expect cornerbacks to squat more in coverage to challenge the break point. That’s kind of the drill when defensive backs are matched up versus older receivers who don’t have the acceleration or long speed to run past them. They take more risks and will sit on routes.

However, given Johnson’s experience as a route-runner—plus his size—he can still win on the dig, curl, etc. when the ball is on time and put on the proper shoulder.

And Johnson will get that working with Luck.

One thing's for sure. When the bell sounds (there isn't a bell -- but there should really be a bell) to open free agency Colts general manager Ryan Grigson gets down to business.

Even if much of that business has to be conducted prior to 4 PM at a Denny's.

Jared Odrick to Jaguars: 5 Years, $42.5 Million, $22 Million Guaranteed

Jared Odrick to Jaguars: 5 Years, $42.5 Million, $22 Million Guaranteed

USA TODAY Sports

You can't take it with you.

Entering free agency, no team in the NFL had more coin to spend in free agency than the Jacksonville Jaguars. On Tuesday the team spent a chunk of that cap space on tight end Julius Thomas.

On Wednesday, it was the defense's turn.

As Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported, the Jaguars inked defensive tackle Jared Odrick to a five-year deal that will pay the 27-year-old an average of $8.5 million per season.

Odrick told reporters via the team's website that he views the Jaguars as an opportunity to be part of something special:

I’ve had a smile all day. It’s not because of the number I saw, but the people I’m meeting. It’s exciting to be a part of not just an organization on the rise, but a city on the rise. He (head coach Gus Bradley) is an energetic guy, something I wasn’t used to in Miami.

Are you saying Joe Philbin isn't a bundle of energy? Who knew?

The defense in Jacksonville remains a work in progress. The team got better at rushing the passer in 2014, but there's still plenty of room for improvement, and the Jags had the resources to spend big to do that.

However, Odrick only has 16.5 sacks in five NFL seasons. Only once in those five years has Odrick received a positive grade in run defense from Pro Football Focus. Odrick barely snuck inside the top 20 at position at PFF last year.

Part of it may be the overpaying that's often part and parcel for struggling teams, as it's they only way those teams can attract free agents to begin with.

Still, it feels like the Jaguars overshot the mark here on a good (but not great) player.

Grade: C

Dan Skuta to Jaguars: 5 Years, $20.5 Million

Dan Skuta to Jaguars: 5 Years, $20.5 Million

USA TODAY Sports

Might as well get this one out of the way.

It happens every year in free agency. Somehow, someway, an NFL team somehow convinces itself that a role player is worth starter money.

This isn't meant to slam Dan Skuta, who inked a five-year, $20.5 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Wednesday.

The seventh-year veteran is coming off a career year, logging five sacks for the San Francisco 49ers in 2014. Skuta also has experience playing a number of positions, versatility that John Oehser of the Jaguars' website wrote appealed to head coach Gus Bradley:

Versatility is one reason Skuta signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Jaguars Wednesday, and that same versatility – along with a recently-exhibited ability to rush the passer – could put him in a role the Jaguars need him to fill.

Skuta, who spent the last two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, registered five sacks last season, a total that makes him a fit for the team’s Otto linebacker position – a position that emphasizes run defense on the strong side of the defense and the ability to provide pass rush.

And yes, the word “Otto” was one Skuta heard Wednesday.

“They’ve said it to me a few times already,” Skuta said Wednesday. “I got a short rundown of the things I could be doing. I understand why it’s probably hard to find someone to come in and fill it, but I think that could be me and I think I can be really good at it."

Still, we're talking about a 28-year-old linebacker who had half a sack entering 2014 — for his career.Skuta has never played even 400 defensive snaps in a season.

It's paying a player coming off a fluke year at a rate that can only be justified if Skuta hits his ceiling.

And both are big free agency no-nos.

Tuesday didn't go so well for the defending Super Bowl champions, with cornerback Darrelle Revis returning to the New York Jets in free agency. Running back Shane Vereen is headed to New York as well, inking a multi-year deal with the New York Giants.

On Wednesday it was the Pats' turn, and as they often do New England added an undervalued veteran with a good shot at outplaying his new contract in short order.

As Mike Wilkening of Pro Football Talk reports, the Patriots signed four-year veteran Jabaal Sheard to a two-year, $11 million contract. Half the deal is guaranteed.

At first glance, over $5 million a season may seem a lot to play a "pass-rusher" who managed only two sacks last year.

However, Sheard is only 25, and in his first two seasons (as a 4-3 defensive end) Sheard topped 50 tackles with 15.5 sacks.

At worst, he's a rotational player with experience in both three and four-man fronts.

At best, he's the heir apparent to the aging Rob Ninkovich.

Either way, he's a 25-year-old with 23.5 career sacks who the Pats got below market.

As ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted Wednesday, "Text from one league source on Patriots landing former Browns LB/DE Jabaal Sheard: "Will be top 5 signing of free agency, guarantee it."

Outside players who have stayed with their 2014 teams, this may well be the best signing of free agency so far, at least from a value perspective.

No wonder everyone hates the Patriots (well, except Patriots' fans).

Curtis Lofton to Raiders: 3 Years, $18 Million, $10 Million Guaranteed

Curtis Lofton to Raiders: 3 Years, $18 Million, $10 Million Guaranteed

Chris Graythen/Getty Images

Like the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Raiders had a ton of cap space entering free agency this year.

Like the Jaguars, the Raiders also had more than a little work to do on defense.

On Wednesday, the Raiders got down to it.

As Scott Bair of CSN Bay Area reported, the Raiders agreed to terms on a three-year, $18 million free-agent deal with veteran inside linebacker Curtis Lofton.

The 28-year-old Lofton, who spent the last three years with the New Orleans Saints, finished fourth in the NFL with 144 total tackles a year ago.

ESPN's Bill Williamson sees the addition of Lofton as a big boost for a Raiders defense that badly needed it:

Lofton, 28, is a tackling machine. He had 144 tackles last season and has had at least 123 tackles in each of the past four seasons. The knock on Lofton is he is not great in coverage, but he is a good, solid signal-caller for a defense. The Raiders were looking for a new middle linebacker after cutting Nick Roach because of health concerns. In 2014, Miles Burris played for Roach, who was out all last season with a concussion, and struggled.

It's true that Burris struggled last year, and Lofton should add valuable veteran experience between youngsters Sio Moore and Khalil Mack.

However, it's also true that Lofton struggles in coverage, and he graded out a so-so 29th among inside linebackers at Pro Football Focus even while racking up all those tackles for the Saints a year ago.

And that makes that $10 million in guarantees a bit tougher to swallow.

Bruce Carter to Buccaneers: 4 Years, $17 Million, $4.25 Million Guaranteed

Gus Ruelas/Associated Press

The Raiders weren't the only NFL team that threw some cash at their problems at linebacker on Wednesday. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got in on the action too.

According to Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' website, Tampa inked free agent outside linebacker Bruce Carter to a four-year contract.

However, there's a bit of confusion regarding the size of the pact. Mike Garafalo of Fox Sports puts the deal at $20.5 million. Tom Pelissero of USA Today , on the other hand, wrote that the deal is for $17 million, with a guarantee of only $4.25 million.

Granted, some will look at that small guarantee and Carter's five interceptions last year (tops among linebackers and fourth in the NFL) and proclaim this deal a "steal."

However, turnovers are about as accurate a predictor of future success as happy thoughts. Carter is talented, but he's also erratic. Last year the 27-year-old ranked as the fourth-worst qualifying 4-3 outside linebacker in the NFL per Pro Football Focus.

Still, while signing Carter may not be a source for great enthusiasm, it's also hard to get too bent out of joint over what appears to be essentially a "prove it" contract for the four-year veteran.

Sean Weatherspoon, Corey Peters, and Cory Redding to Cardinals

John Bazemore/Associated Press

None of this trio of acquisitions by the Arizona Cardinals is any sort of blockbuster on its own. However, since the Arizona Cardinals weren't exactly flush in cap space before spending a chunk of money on guard Mike Iupati, the rest of free agency for the Redbirds will likely be spent looking in the scratch-and-dent aisle.

In that respect, team did pretty well on Wednesday, adding an inside linebacker and a pair of Coreys.

No, not them.

As Rand Getlin of Yahoo Sports reports, the Cardinals signed linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, who has spent his entire five-year career with the Atlanta Falcons, to a one-year deal worth just under $4 million.

The 27-year-old Weatherspoon had 115 tackles for the Falcons back in 2011, but injuries have derailed his career in recent years. Weatherspoon has missed a whopping 28 games over the past three seasons, including all of 2014 with a torn Achilles.

The Cardinals weren't finished filching from their fellow feathered franchise. As Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports, the Cardinals also signed defensive tackle Corey Peters away from the Falcons. The 26-year-old Peters, who had 26 tackles and two sacks in 2014, signed for three years and $11.25 million, with $5.75 million guaranteed.

But wait, there's more!

Since the Cardinals took advantage of a limited time offer (note to self: less late-night cable TV) the team was also able to agree to terms with defensive end Cory Redding on a two-year, $6 million contract according to Mike Chappell of The Indy Star.

Redding, 34, had 35 tackles and 3.5 sacks for the Indianapolis Colts in 2014.

As I said, none of these deals are blowing up the internet or talk radio. Redding will turn 35 during the upcoming season. Weatherspoon hasn't played in a meaningful game since December of 2013.

The Cardinals had holes to fill with the departures of Darnell Dockett, Dan Williams and Larry Foote (who joined the coaching staff), and they had limited financial resources with which to fill those holes.

In that respect, general manager Steve Keim did well.

Rodney Hudson to Raiders: 5 Years, $44.5 Million, $20 Million Guaranteed

Rodney Hudson to Raiders: 5 Years, $44.5 Million, $20 Million Guaranteed

Reed Hoffmann/Associated Press

Given their huge free agent war chest, the Oakland Raiders were linked to any number of prominent free agents in recent weeks.

However, whether it was Randall Cobb re-signing with the Packers or Ndamukong Suh heading to Miami, the Raiders missed out on their big name targets.

Well, most of them anyway.

The Raiders did land one whopper though. As Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported, the Raiders came to terms with center Rodney Hudson (formerly of the Kansas City Chiefs) on a five-year, $44.5 million contract. The deal contains $20 million in guarantees.

The 25-year-old didn't come cheaply, but Chris Burke of Sports Illustrated is on board with the signing:

The Raiders now have the makings of a mauling front, at least on the left side—Hudson will have impressive 2014 rookie guard Gabe Jackson lined up next to him and Donald Penn returns at LT off a strong Oakland debut.

More importantly, getting Hudson to sign on the dotted line represents an important step forward for the Raiders' image this offseason. New coach Jack Del Rio talked at the combine about the challenge of trying to recruit elite players to Oakland, where the team obviously has struggled for some time and the facilities are lacking.

The Raiders certainly had the coin to afford signing Hudson, and Oakland just landed PFF's third-ranked center just as he's entering the prime of his career.

What's not to like?

Antrel Rolle to Bears: 3 Years, 11.25 Million, $5 Million Guaranteed

Antrel Rolle to Bears: 3 Years, 11.25 Million, $5 Million Guaranteed

Bill Kostroun/Associated Press

The Chicago Bears were burning the midnight oil on Wednesday, working late into the night to address the back end of their defense.

The Bears accomplished that goal. As Pro Football Talk reported, Chicago signed veteran safety Antrel Rolle to a three-year, $11.75 million contract that includes five million in guarantees.

The 32-year-old was wildly productive in his five seasons with the New York Giants. In each of those seasons Rolle tallied at least 85 tackles, racking up 14 interceptions along the way.

However, Rolle's play fell off in 2014. After picking off six passes and finishing ninth among all safeties at Pro Football Focus in 2013, Rolle slipped all the way to 81st a year ago.

OK, so maybe fell off should have been followed by "a cliff."

Simply put, the Bears are risking five million dollars on 2014 being more fluke and less the beginning of the end for Rolle.

I'm not going to sit here and say I'm crazy about their chances, but for a Bears secondary that ranked 30th in pass defense last year it's a risk worth taking.

TRADE: Ryan Fitzpatrick to Jets for Conditional Draft Pick

TRADE: Ryan Fitzpatrick to Jets for Conditional Draft Pick

Phelan M. Ebenhack/Associated Press

There was another trade in the NFL on Wednesday, one that sent shockwaves rippling across the football landscape.

OK, so it was the football landscape of NFL players who went to Harvard. What-ever.

As Rich Cimini of ESPN reports, the New York Jets have acquired the 32-year-old Fitzpatrick from the Houston Texans for a conditional pick.

If Fitzpatrick is terrible in New York, or gets eaten by an alligator that lives in the New York sewers (what? It's TRUE.) then the Texans just get a pizza from Paulie Gee's in Brooklyn, recently voted the seventh-best pizza in New York by the Village Voice.

Yummy.

However, if Fitzpatrick reaches certain playing time incentives, then the Texans get that pizza and a case of Miller Lite.

I know, they should have tried for a microbrew, right?

OK, so maybe it's a seventh-round pick, or a sixth-rounder if Fitzpatrick plays a certain number of snaps.

Kidding aside, Fitzpatrick actually wasn't awful for the Texans last year. He threw 17 touchdowns against only eight interceptions and posted a passer rating over 95.

However, the Freddy Krueger of NFL quarterbacks is what he is -- a pop-gun armed option who puts the entire offense on training wheels.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but the Jets are better off with Geno Smith under center in Week 1.

In any event given my choice of Fitzpatrick, the picks or the pizza, I think I'll take the pie.

Brian Hoyer to Texans: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Brian Hoyer to Texans: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Gregory Shamus/Getty Images

After mixed results as a starter for the Cleveland Browns last season, quarterback Brian Hoyer is embracing a change of scenery with the Houston Texans.

Houston confirmed in a release on its team website that it signed the 29-year-old signal-caller.

Adam Caplan of ESPN reported Hoyer's deal is two years and worth $10.5 million with $4.75 million guaranteed.

Hoyer was handed the reins over Johnny Manziel in Cleveland last season after he showed flashes in 2013. While Hoyer threw for a respectable 3,326 yards, the fact that he had just 13 touchdown passes as opposed to 12 interceptions resulted in him being benched by the end of the campaign.

The door still appeared to be open for a return, but it was slammed shut when the Browns signed journeyman Josh McCown.

According to Dane Brugler of CBSSports.com, that move essentially punched Hoyer's ticket out of town:

While Hoyer certainly had his low points during his tenure with the Browns, he did manage to win more games than he lost as part of a franchise that has floundered for more than 15 years, per Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland:

The Browns clearly didn't feel as though Hoyer was their quarterback of the future, though, and they apparently figured that McCown could be as effective or even more so as the veteran presence on the roster.

Cleveland's decision to move on seemed like it could be a major hit to Hoyer's chances of landing a starting job.

Shortly after the conclusion of the 2014 season, the former Michigan State standout was confident that he would end up being a starter somewhere, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com:

It remains to be seen if Hoyer's prediction will come true, but he is undoubtedly determined to be under center in Week 1 of the regular season.

Hoyer may not be among the most physically gifted quarterbacks in the league, but his leadership and toughness led to him becoming a fan favorite in Cleveland.

In many ways, the former undrafted signing of the New England Patriots overcame the odds to ascend to starting status in the NFL.

Since he already did it once, perhaps Hoyer will find a way to crack the lineup once again.

DeVante Parker: Breaking Down Louisville WR's Pro-Day Workout

lathur | 11:21 AM | | | | | Be the first to comment!

DeVante Parker, one of the top wide receivers in the 2015 NFL draft, was a limited participant in Louisville's pro day on Wednesday.

Parker is battling Amari Cooper and Kevin White, among others, for draft placement at one of the class' deepest positions. He had a solid all-around performance at the NFL Scouting Combine, highlighted by a 4.45-second run in the 40-yard dash.

Louisville Football noted every NFL team had a presence for the pro day:

Howie Lindsey of Cardinal Sports reported Parker spent some time early on talking with a scout for the Minnesota Vikings:

It's an interesting connection because the Vikings feature former Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and have a need at the position.

Who do you think is the top WR in the 2015 class?

Who do you think is the top WR in the 2015 class?

  • Amari Cooper

  • Kevin White

  • DeVante Parker

  • Other

Last month, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press passed along comments from Parker about potentially getting to play alongside Bridgewater again. They spent three years together with the Cardinals starting in 2011.

"That would be really good to reunite with (Bridgewater)," Parker said. "We've got a good connection. That would be a good thing."

Once the workouts began, Parker opted against running the 40. It's a decision a lot of prospects make if they are comfortable with the number they posted at the combine. A number in the 4.40s is good enough for a player of his size (6'3'', 209 lbs).

Steve Jones of The Courier-Journal provided word of the decision:

Parker joined the action once they moved to the on-field work.

Lindsey highlighted a smooth reception on a pass from Brian Brohm, who played at Louisville and is currently with the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers:

Michael McCammon of Cardinal Authority noted a remark from one scout in attendance:

Courier-Journal Sports showcased more work between Brohm and Parker:

More of the same via Jones:

Louisville Football considered it a "sharp" performance overall:

Parker spoke with the media after the workout and listed some of the teams he's spoken with, including the aforementioned Vikings, per Jonathan Lintner of The Courier-Journal:

He limited the potential downside of the workout by not running the 40. It was the right move. A slower performance would have been notable in front of a sizable crowd of talent evaluators, and he probably couldn't have significantly improved his time.

There was a clear focus on getting his hands out in front to make the grab. It's something he's been working on after some issues letting the ball get too close to his body in college. The process should become cleaner by the time his rookie season gets underway.

All told, Parker didn't do anything to severely alter his stock in either direction on Wednesday.

Drew Brees Is Sending Mad Shade at the New Orleans Saints for Jimmy Graham Trade

lathur | 11:21 AM | | | | | Be the first to comment!

New Orleans is clearing cap space, and no one in the Saints fanbase or franchise seems happy about how things have shaken out.

In the last 24 hours, the Saints have moved Jimmy Graham and released Pierre Thomas and Curtis Lofton, leaving voids in the shape of a singular playmaker and a beloved veteran on the roster.

It all happened quick—a scalpel-like removal, as jarring trades tend to be. Graham's last tweet before changing his Twitter bio to "Traded" Tuesday was a note expressing his joy that the team had re-signed running back Mark Ingram.

Now, the face of the Saints franchise is joining Graham in expressing disappointment in the team's decision to move one of its most potent weapons to the Seattle Seahawks. Drew Brees isn't saying anything, but he tweeted a picture Wednesday afternoon that appears to sum up his opinion of the Saints' trade.

Yep, Brees' kids love Graham, and now dad has to explain to them how the franchise tag is a weird thing and the team coffers can't support him, Graham and the defensive makeover the Saints appear to be gunning for this offseason.

Stay strong, children. You still have Brandin Cooks.

Dan is on Twitter, listening to "Candle in the Wind" and staring at a crumpled picture of Graham getting groped by the Joker.

An alligator you must see to believe reportedly invades Florida golf course

lathur | 10:28 AM | | | | | Be the first to comment!

A large alligator hit the links at the Myakka Pines Golf Club in Englewood, Fla., last week — or at least that’s one theory. The other theory is that the, quite frankly, insane-looking dinosaur-like creature depicted in photographs published to the golf club’s Facebook page was superimposed onto the green thanks to Photoshop.

Myakka Pines officials denied the photos were altered in any way on Wednesday, noting on Facebook, “Lots of people think the pic is photo shopped….Nope! We just grown ‘em big in these parts!!”

The Washington Post reached out to Myakka Pines but has not yet heard back.

But considering Myakka Pines is located near the wetlands of the Myakka State Forest, the monster gator spotting doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility. Check out some of the previous gators spotted on the links.

Charles Barkley thinks paying NCAA athletes is a turrible idea

Every year during March Madness, colleges and the NCAA make millions upon millions of dollars on the backs of uncompensated athletes, inspiring a chorus of voices to chirp about the unfairness of it all.

Charles Barkley isn’t among those voices.

“You’re missing the boat if you think everyone should get paid,” the TV hoops commentator said at CBS and Turner Sports’ NCAA Tournament Media Day (via USA Today). “First of all, there’s not that many good college players. Less than one percent are going to play in the NBA. What about the other 99 percent that are getting a free education? Think about it.”

Paying them would bankrupt the system and just isn’t feasible.

“Think about all these people in debt that had to borrow money to go to college,” he said. “There’s only a couple of players on the college team that actually can really play in every sport, so sometimes you have to look at the big picture. All of those kids are getting a free education. But let’s say we do it your way … we have to pay the diving team, the swimming team. That’s crazy.”

Most Americans agree, according to a YouGov poll conducted for the Huffington Post last month. Forty-four percent of those surveyed said they strongly or at least somewhat oppose paying all student-athletes with 30 percent strongly or somewhat favoring payment. A quarter of respondents were unsure.

Barkley also sees an inherent unfairness in allowing athletes to get endorsement deals.

“The endorsement thing is tricky because only the good players are going to be endorsed,” he said. “The bad players, think about it, let’s say hypothetically the quarterbacks do endorsements. He can’t do anything without a running back or an offensive line. So that’d be like only paying the good player on the NBA team.”

Kyle Williams, Bills Agree to New Contract: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

Matt Sullivan/Getty Images

The Buffalo Bills have reportedly reached an agreement with defensive tackle Kyle Williams to add another year to his current deal. He's now under contract through the 2017 season.

Adam Schefter of ESPN passed along word of the extension:

Mike Rodak of ESPN believes the deal may also restructure his cap hit for this season:

Williams has been a stalwart member of Buffalo's defensive line since being selected in the fifth round out of LSU in the 2006 draft. He's racked up over 450 tackles and 34.5 sacks in 130 career games.

Beyond his impact, a secondary reason for the signing may be the contract status of Marcell Dareus.

The Bills' other star defensive tackle is scheduled to become a free agent after next season. The team likely didn't want to risk losing two valuable contributors on the interior in consecutive years if it can't re-sign Dareus. Adding another year to Williams' deal prevents that possibility.

Buffalo should once again have one of the best defensive fronts in football with Mario Williams and Jerry Hughes joining the tackle tandem. The team appears ready to lean heavily on its running game and defense without a reliable quarterback on the roster.

Williams must play a key role if the Bills are going to have success with that approach in 2015 and beyond.

Curtis Lofton to Raiders: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction

Chris Graythen/Getty Images

The Oakland Raiders have reportedly agreed to terms with free-agent linebacker Curtis Lofton on a three-year contract. Financial details weren't immediately released.

Michael C. Wright of ESPN broke the news:

ESPN's Josina Anderson received confirmation from Lofton and provided the contract length:

Lofton spent the first four years of his career with the Atlanta Falcons before moving to the division rival New Orleans Saints for the past three. He's tallied 885 tackles, 11 forced fumbles, seven sacks and three interceptions in 112 career games.

The 28-year-old Oklahoma product should provide a stabilizing influence in the middle. The Raiders already have the intriguing tandem of Khalil Mack, who looked like a star on the rise as a rookie, and Sio Moore on the outside.

Lofton hasn't missed a single regular-season game since being drafted in 2008. That type of durability always helps limit the risk of a free-agent signing. He's also coming off a year where he made 145 tackles, showcasing his effectiveness against the run.

All told, it seems like an ideal fit.
