The Southwestern Athletic Conference has suspended seven Southern women’s basketball players and eight Texas Southern players for their role in a chaotic on-court brawl Saturday night, the Advocate is reporting. The conference also announced that the game will count as a loss for both teams, meaning Texas Southern earned the SWAC regular season title at 16-2 while Southern fell to 15-3.
However, Texas Southern announced it will not participate in the SWAC tournament because it will not have enough players to field a five-person lineup. Southern will have six available players for its game against Grambling on Wednesday in the SWAC quarterfinals
The Advocate has published video of the fight, which involved players, cheerleaders and spectators.
Among the suspended Southern players were Kendra Coleman and Jasmine Jefferson, who were team captains and four-year starters. Coleman was an all-SWAC first-team selection and Jefferson was named to the second team. Southern also dismissed senior guard Keonia Parrish from the team.
The SWAC has yet to announce how Texas Southern’s absence will affect the conference tournament bracket. The top-seeded Tigers were supposed to play either eighth-seeded Alabama A&M or ninth-seeded Mississippi Valley State in the quarterfinals on Wednesday night.
