The New Orleans Saints agreed to trade star tight end Jimmy Graham and a fourth-round NFL draft pick to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for center Max Unger and a first-round pick, The Washington Post’s Mark Maske confirms. Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer first reported the news on Twitter.
Saints defensive end Cam Jordan reacted immediately on Twitter, indicating he was surprised and sad to see his friend go.
Jordan’s not alone. Many were caught off guard, especially in light of the four-year, $40 million contract Graham signed with the Saints last summer.
Looking at the trade from the Seahawks’ perspective, however, things are a little rosier. ESPN’s Mike Greenberg called Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson “the biggest winner” so far in free agent season.
While the Seahawks will undoubtedly gain more power in their short-pass game, the addition of Unger to the Saints’ offensive line should not be overlooked. The 28-year-old will come in to likely replace the struggling 36-year-old Jonathan Goodwin, who became an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday, Nola.com reports.
