Ravens trade Haloti Ngata to Lions for draft picks

The Baltimore Ravens traded Haloti Ngata, a nine-year veteran defensive tackle to the Detroit Lions for draft picks.

In Ngata, Detroit gets someone who will help replace Ndamukong Suh, who is headed to the Miami Dolphins, and a seventh-round draft pick. In return, Baltimore will receive fourth- and fifth-round picks in the 2015 draft, in addition to clearing salary-cap space. Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome had been trying to re-negotiate Ngata’s contract, which is worth $8.5 million and carries a $16 million salary cap figure.

Ngata, 31, is a five-time Pro Bowler who missed the last four games of the 2014 season while serving a suspension for using Adderall. He’ll have gargantuan shoes to fill in Detroit.

Ravens fans were bracing for the departure of a popular player and reminding themselves of General Manager Ozzie Newsome’s record of success.
