Don’t expect Jay Cutler to be changing teams when the NFL’s season officially begins at 4 p.m. EDT Tuesday.
There are conflicting reports about whether the Chicago Bears tried to trade their high-priced quarterback, but the bottom line is that, as everyone may have expected all along, he’ll be back under center for the team in 2015. Although incoming Coach John Fox and General Manager Ryan Pace have said little about Cutler since being hired, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen quotes a source saying there was “absolutely zero truth” to reports that Cutler was being offered to teams. Nor will he be cut.
Now, according to Mortensen, Fox and Pace are expected to publicly clarify Cutler’s status soon, but the reality is that there were few other options. Cutler has an albatross of a contract that no other team was eager to take on in exchange for a quarterback who led the NFL in turnovers last year. Now, if he’s still on the roster Thursday, Cutler’s $10 million guarantee for 2016 will kick in.
