Defending champion India scored an eight-wicket victory over Ireland on Tuesday at the Cricket World Cup in Hamilton, New Zealand, clinching Pool B with its fifth straight win at the event and ninth straight World Cup win overall, tied for the second-longest streak in the event’s history.

India had slumped in the run-up to the event, failing to win in the two months it spent preparing in Australia.

“We have been here for over four months, we had to sacrifice somewhere,” India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni told the Associated Press. “I knew it [form] would be back when the World Cup started.

“I’m glad all of us have stepped up. It feels good — we just have to take the momentum forward.”

Ireland, which has surprised observers with three wins at the World Cup, must now get at least a point from its final pool-stage match against Pakistan on Saturday night (11:30 p.m. EDT) to ensure a spot in the quarterfinals.

“It’s all about being mentally fresh for that game in Adelaide,” Ireland captain William Porterfield said, per the AP. “It’s a winner-takes-all for us.”
