That 3-iron Rory McIlroy tossed in a fit of pique Friday is back in his golf bag, safe and sound, thanks to Donald Trump.
The world’s No. 1 golfer, who admitted that he gave into frustration when he flung the club into a lake on the eighth hole of the Blue Monster course on Friday at Trump National Doral Miami, was forced to make do with 13 clubs in Saturday’s round of the WGC Championship.
On Sunday, Trump rode to the rescue. Technically, the dirty work was done by a scuba diver, who pulled the club out of the drink.
“Rory, I didn’t want you to play with 13 clubs again,” Trump said (via USA Today) as he handed over the iron Sunday. “Thirteen is an unlucky number.”
This being Trump, he had a deal in mind when McIlroy said he’d give it back after the final round.
“We could auction it off to charity or we could put it in a trophy case here at Doral,” Trump said. “I give a lot of money to charity so I think we’ll have the club mounted and placed in the clubhouse somewhere.”
