Tim Tebow hasn’t had a sniff of an NFL game since the late summer of 2013, but that hasn’t dampened his or his fans’ hopes for a pro-career renaissance.
Never mind that the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner and 2011 NFL darling has shown flair in his budding broadcasting career, he has never stopped believing that he can be an NFL quarterback. But believing it and stepping up are two different things and a new report suggests that Tebow might be ready to see what, if anything, he has left when the NFL’s first veterans combine is held March 22.
Tebow, who was cut by the New England Patriots in September 2013, has stayed in shape even as he has worked on the SEC Network, ESPN and “Good Morning America.” The Boston Globe’s Ben Volin reports:
Turns out Tebow has been working diligently with Tom House (also Tom Brady’s personal coach) in Los Angeles over the last two years, sharpening his skills and hoping for one last shot. House told us on Friday that he isn’t sure if Tebow will be attending the combine, but “he went from being a little inaccurate and didn’t throw a whole lot of spirals, to throwing very accurate and real good at spinning the ball.”
When last seen in New England, Tebow’s game was a mess and, worse, he’d lost the burst that was so big a part of the success he had with the 2011 Denver Broncos. The veterans combine would give him, along with 99 others, another shot during the one-day event at the Arizona Cardinals’ facility in Phoenix. It is open to veteran free agents and, like the February Scouting Combine, will consist of position drills, timing, testing and other assessments.
“There’s a void there. There was nothing for that guy out there who has one or two or three years in the league and is not with a team and is at the mercy of when the phone rings or when his agent gets him a workout,” NFL director of football development Matt Birk told ESPN in January. This will be a forum for these guys to showcase their talents and a service for our clubs instead of [what had been] an inefficient process.”
Among other name veterans, the combine is expected to attract Michael Sam and Vince Young.
