The Baltimore Ravens released Jacoby Jones, a hero of their most recent Super Bowl run.
The move is not unexpected because Jacoby, a wide receiver and special-teams return man, would have cost the team $3.3 million against the salary cap this year. Last March, he signed a four-year, $12-million deal with the Ravens and received $4.5 million over the year.
Jones, 30, was a first-team All-Pro on special teams in the 2012 season, but his contributions were more significant in the Ravens’ Super Bowl run. He caught a 70-yard touchdown pass that forced overtime against the Denver Broncos and returned a kickoff 108 yards for a touchdown in the Super Bowl. That was the longest play in Super Bowl history.
Last season, though, he caught only nine passes for 131 yards and zero touchdowns.
