Akron basketball will pay students to attend games

The Akron men’s basketball team is 17-9 and in the hunt for the Mid-American Conference East Division title. The Zips are 13-2 at home this season. They made the NCAA tournament in three of the previous six seasons. More than 21,000 undergraduates attend the school.

For those reasons, one would think Akron — a fairly successful program with a deep pool of fans — shouldn’t have much trouble attracting student fans. But that doesn’t seem to be the case, because the Zips will pay students to attend games as part of what they’re calling a “Student Appreciation Program.”

As Lost Lettermen points out, the promotion didn’t work for Wednesday’s game: Only 687 students turned out for the Toledo game.

The Zips have two home games left at 5,500-seat James A. Rhodes Arena, against Miami (Ohio) on Saturday and Ohio on Feb. 27.
