Alex Rodriguez got a jump start on his return to baseball by showing up early to spring training on Monday, two days before his fellow position players.

His coaches and teammates weren’t expecting him so early, Billy Witz of the New York Times reports:

Rodriguez’s arrival seem to catch the Yankees by surprise.

Amid rumors earlier Monday that Rodriguez would arrive, General Manager Brian Cashman said that he was trying to confirm whether they were true.

Cashman was asked what Rodriguez’s return would be like.

“From my end, he’ll show up like everybody else,” Cashman said. “It’s different from your end. Obviously, he’ll be the focus you guys are going to want to get access to. From the baseball operations standpoint, he’ll be coming in with everybody else. He’ll be in his hitting group, he’ll be in his fielding group, in his stretching and that stuff on the conditioning side. So it will be no different on our end.”

Rodriguez hasn’t played for the Yankees since 2013, when Major League Baseball suspended him for 211 games over his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal (a punishment that later was reduced to the 2014 season). Last week, Rodriguez apologized to fans in a handwritten statement.

The three-time AL MVP, who turns 40 in July, last played a full season in 2007.
