Offensive Prospect to Watch: Sammie Coates, WR, Auburn
There are many wide receivers who could be drafted in the first round, but the offensive player not garnering enough attention is Auburn Tigers star Sammie Coates.
At 6”2” and 201 pounds, Coates has the size and the physicality to be a force in the NFL, but he is still very rough around the edges. With drops plaguing his college career and effort being inconsistent, he needs to find a team with a clear and respected power structure.
NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein breaks down the positives and negatives of Coates:
Big, fast and raw. Vertical wide receiver with the ability to hit big plays and have dominant games. Coates must be coached to trust his quarterback and run through his deep routes in order to reach his potential. He has early round traits and late-round receiving skills right now, but the upside will be hard to pass on and could pay off in a big way. He will be tethered to the JUGS machine in rookie camp.
The perfect answer for Coates would be landing with the Seattle Seahawks at No. 31 overall in the first round. Seattle has a desperate need for a wide receiver, and the coaching staff has the ability to get the most out of a player like Coates.
With a skilled quarterback like Russell Wilson slinging the ball and the raw talent to emerge as one of the top receivers on the roster right away, Coates would step into a large role with the team if he dedicates himself to becoming more consistent in the offseason.
Defensive Prospect to Watch: Landon Collins, SS, Alabama
The scouting combine will give many players the chance to shine, but the defensive player making the most waves is Alabama Crimson Tide safety Landon Collins.
On one hand, Collins is a dominant run-stopper who understands how to step up against the toughest rushing attacks. With great field vision and elite tackling ability, he will emerge as one of the top run-stopping safeties in the NFL.
Unfortunately, he struggled at times against the pass. Collins doesn’t have elite size or speed, and bigger receivers can take advantage of his weaknesses. With the right development, though, he should be able to successfully make the transition to the NFL.
Omar Kelly of the Sun Sentinel spoke about Collins' draft position:
The best possible option for the former Alabama safety is the Philadelphia Eagles at No. 20 overall. The team is in desperate need of a safety. While his struggles against the pass could be a concern, he is the hard-hitting prospect the defense needs.
Led by head coach Chip Kelly, Collins will have the support system needed to get better on the field and emerge as one of the top players from this year’s class. Alongside fellow safety Malcolm Jenkins, the Eagles would have the safety pair the franchise needs to thrive.
As long as he performs well at the scouting combine, his first-round selection should be guaranteed.
