Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden announced the team is heading into its offseason work under the assumption Robert Griffin III will be the starting quarterback next season.

Mike Jones of the Washington Post noted the coach's current stance:

Rich Tandler of CSN Washington and Reuben Frank of CSN Philly provided further comments from Gruden:

It's an interesting development given the timing. The Redskins utilized three different quarterbacks heavily last season. Along with Griffin, Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy, who's set to become a free agent, also seen their fair share of snaps.

Who would get your vote as Redskins' starting QB?

Who would get your vote as Redskins' starting QB?

  • Robert Griffin III

  • Kirk Cousins

  • Outside addition

Neither Griffin or Cousins seemingly stood out enough to hold a clear grip on the starting job. Yet, for whatever reason Gruden felt compelled to make it clear the 2012 Offensive Rookie of the Year sits atop the depth chart.

There were flashes of the first-year version of Griffin this past season. They were fleeting, however, as he finished the campaign with four passing touchdowns and six interceptions. He also lacked the dynamic playmaking ability on the ground he previously showcased.

Though there's no doubt a healthy, in-form Griffin is the Redskins' best option, it's unclear if he'll be back at that level in the fall. At the very least, it's apparently now his job to lose entering camp.
