The Cleveland Browns are just the saddest NFL franchise. They’ve made the playoffs exactly twice over their past 22 seasons, the last time in 2002, and haven’t actually won a postseason game since 1994. Their ideal franchise quarterback — Johnny Manziel — was terrible in limited action last season and is now in rehab for alcohol abuse. League-leading wide receiver Josh Gordon is perpetually suspended. GM Ray Farmer is being investigated by the league for sending text messages to the sideline during games last season, a violation of league rules.
But now comes word of a new era in Cleveland. That’s right, the team known for its plain-Jane orange helmets is getting a logo.
Sources tell The Fan’s Daryl Ruiter that the logo will not incorporate the “Brownie” elf used by the team in the 1950s and ’60s. This is a shame.
In non-logo news, Cleveland reportedly is interested in signing free agent quarterback Josh McCown, one of the few known commodities on the free agent quarterback market this offseason. McCown has played for six NFL teams over his 12-year NFL career, throwing for a Browns-ian 61 touchdown passes and 59 interceptions. He started 11 games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season.
Brian Hoyer, who started strong last season for Cleveland before a slump led to his benching and the disastrous Manziel experiment, is an unrestricted free agent and can sign with anyone. Farmer reportedly wants to talk to Hoyer and his agent about re-signing at the NFL combine this week.
