The Edmonton Oilers and Boston Bruins needed a shootout to settle things on Wednesday night.
Twenty-four skaters later, it finally ended when Oilers defenseman Martin Marincin at long last solved the riddle to give Edmonton a 4-3 win, its first victory over the Bruins since Oct. 17, 2000. Marincin, who had never once scored an NHL goal, was the only player from either team to find the back of the net in the shootout. It was his 23rd birthday, too.
Take a look at Marincin’s game-winner (which starts at about the 10:30 mark, for those of you who don’t want to watch 10-plus minutes of non-scoring). He actually whiffs on his attempt, but it goes in anyway.
“I just tried to make a move, and the ice was bad,” Marincin told Reuters. “So I guess I had some good luck.”
It wasn’t the longest shootout in NHL history, though it sure seemed that way. In December, the Capitals and Panthers went 20 rounds before Florida finally came out on top. There actually were goals in that one.
