Benjamin Miller, a 20-year-old man who was badly gored during a bull-running festival Saturday in Spain, has been moved from the intensive care unit and is improving.

Miller, who is from Georgia, was not expected to require any further surgery, a spokesman for the Clinic Hospital in western Salamanca told the Associated Press Monday. Miller was gored while running in Ciudad Rodrigo’s Carnaval del Toro and underwent three hours of surgery to repair injuries to his thighs, sphincter and back muscles.

Two other men, from Scotland and Spain, also were injured, although much less seriously.

Although Spain’s most famous bull-running event occurs during the San Fermin festival in Pamplona, a number of others are held at fiestas throughout the year and injuries are not unusual. Miller’s incident, though, was captured in frightening images in which the bull repeatedly gores him and knocks him to the ground as people try to distract the bull.

Town councilman Pedro Munoz told the AP that 45,000-50,000 people had attended the four-day fiesta.
