Cleveland Browns GM Ray Farmer apologizes for texts, says he knew of Johnny Manziel’s ‘red flags’

Cleveland Browns General Manager Ray Farmer took responsibility for many of the issues confronting the team while speaking to reporters Thursday at the NFL combine in Indianapolis.

The NFL is investigating Farmer and the Browns over text messages he sent to coaches on the sideline during games last season, in violation of league rules. On Thursday, he apologized.

Per Mary Kay Cabot, the Browns are facing a possible fine and a loss of a draft pick, and Farmer is facing a multi-game suspension.

Farmer also said he and the team knew of Johnny Manziel’s issues before the Browns took the Texas A&M quarterback in the first round of last year’s draft. Manziel performed dreadfully in limited playing time last season and — after he was placed on injured reserve — he was fined by the team after arriving late for treatment on his injured hamstring. The night before, Manziel threw a party that was attended by numerous Browns teammates.

In late January, Manziel checked himself into rehab for a possible dependence on alchohol.

There’s also the matter of who will be the Browns’ quarterback next season. Brian Hoyer, who started 13 games for Cleveland last season and performed well at the start of the year, is an unrestricted free agent, and Manziel is a giant question mark. There has been talk that the Browns could trade up — they have two first-round picks for the second straight year — in order to select Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. Plus, Cleveland has had talks with Josh McCown, one of the few viable options in an underwhelming free agent quarterback class.
