Thierry Henry, who recently retired from soccer, has been tapped to coach Arsenal’s youth squad, Manager Arsene Wenger confirmed on Friday to reporters. Henry’s name has long been thrown around as a possibility to one day take over for Wenger, and now he’s getting his feet wet.
“Thierry Henry … is making his first steps as a coach,” Wenger told reporters at a press conference. “It’s good for our young players to be coached by him, by a legend of the club.”
Wenger wouldn’t say for sure that Henry, who played for Arsenal from 1999 to 2007 and retired as a member of the New York Red Bulls of MLS, was on the path to filling his shoes when he leaves, but Wenger didn’t doubt it could happen.
“That would be a problem of the board to make with that decision,” Wenger said before adding, “of course” the Frenchman would be capable.
“I said that many times. I’ve had many, many, many players who could do this job.”
Henry, 37, currently also works as a commentator for Sky Sports.
