Duke’s Jahlil Okafor will be ACC rookie of the year (because he’s the only player on the ballot)

Duke’s Jahlil Okafor was one of the most heralded freshmen in the country entering the season, and if anything, he’s exceeded expectations. In fact, I think he just might be good enough to win ACC rookie of the year honors.

(The ACSMA is the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association, which votes on preseason and postseason honors.)

Okafor, seen as the probable No. 1 pick in June’s NBA draft and the best pure big man college basketball has seen in quite some time, is averaging 18.2 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. None of the other ACC freshmen expected to make an impact this season — Duke forward Justise Winslow and guard Tyus Jones, plus North Carolina swingman Justin Jackson, to name a few — even come close to comparing.
