Way back in the day, The Post’s Norman Chad wrote that Bill Walton speaks two languages: English and outlandish.
That was years ago. This was Wednesday night, when the conversation during a college basketball game naturally turned to the subject of cow-milking:
“I have been milked”: Four words that never have been uttered on ESPN until Wednesday night.
Walton has been something of a cult hit this season, as he has managed to say something that’s completely daffy in nearly every Pac-12 basketball game he calls (with play-by-play man Dave Pasch a near-perfect straight man to it all). Here are three examples from just one game, USC-Oregon on Feb. 11 (h/t to Awful Announcing, America’s preeminent Walton chroniclers):
Michael Jordan was just an average basketball player.
And then he talked about the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan for like two minutes (plus more Snoop Dogg):
And there was that time during the UCLA-Washington game when he broke down the matchup between Huskies and Bruins (the actual animals, not the teams):
After spending the first 17 years of his Post career writing and editing, Matt and the printed paper had an amicable divorce in 2014. He's now blogging and editing for the Early Lead and the Post's other Web-based products.
