The concussion suffered by Formula One driver Fernando Alonso during a crash in February was so mind-altering that he woke up thinking it was 1995, according to a report in the Spanish daily El Pais.

Back in 1995, Alonso was 13-years-old and at school in his hometown Oviedo, northern Spain. Jose Luis, his father, had built a kart for Alonso when he was aged just three. Alonso has since won two world championships with Renault, rejoining McLaren at the start of this season from Ferrari.

Ron Dennis, chairman of Alonso’s McLaren racing team, said last week that the 33-year-old Alonso suffered retrograde amnesia in the crash, which took place Feb. 22 during preseason testing at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. Alonso spent three nights in the hospital before releasing a YouTube video in which he says he’s “completely fine,” though doctors will not allow him to race in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on March 15 because of the concussion.
