Pending free agent Mark Sanchez is one of the best quarterbacks available this offseason. While it's a fact that speaks more to the lack of depth at the position than his accomplishments through six seasons in the NFL, it helps his open-market stock.

Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com reports a source close to the situation states there's mutual interest between Sanchez and the Philadelphia Eagles for a return:

While all of the talk the past two months has revolved around Eagles quarterback Nick Foles and Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, there is a third quarterback that might be more likely than both to be on the roster.

Unrestricted free agent, and last year's backup-turned-starter, Mark Sanchez.

Sanchez appeared in nine games (eight starts) for the Eagles last season. He finished with 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing better than 64 percent of his throws. His 88.4 passer rating was seven points better than Foles.

As the report mentions, Philadelphia has been linked with a potential trade up in the draft to select Mariota. He previously worked with head coach Chip Kelly at Oregon and is viewed as an ideal fit for the team's offensive system.

It remains to be seen whether the Eagles would be willing to part with the necessary assets to make the trade, however. They own the No. 20 pick in the first round and the reigning Heisman Trophy winner is expected to go in or near the top five.

Even if they do make the deal, having an experienced backup like Sanchez makes sense. That said, the Eagles figure to face competition for his services given the number of teams looking for an upgrade at the crucial position.

All told, Sanchez will likely get to survey the landscape and pick the situation that suits him best. It may very well end up being Philadelphia once again.
