The Patriots apparently are moving forward without defensive lineman Vince Wilfork, who has spent his entire 11-year NFL career in New England.
Wilfork took it well on Twitter.
After an ugly offseason contract squabble led to a new, incentive-laden contract in 2014, Wilfork played in all 19 of the Patriots’ games, not bad for a 33-year-old who was coming off Achilles’ surgery. But the Patriots needed to make a decision on him before Tuesday or else his contract options for both 2015 and 2016 would have automatically kicked in. He would have had a cap number of nearly $9 million next season, too steep a price for someone with so much wear on his tires. So he’ll become a free agent.
