Adam Johnson, a midfielder for Sunderland, has been arrested on suspicion of having sex with an underage girl.
Sunderland suspended Johnson, who remains in police custody, pending the outcome of the investigation.
“A 27-year-old man was arrested earlier today on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16,” Durham Police said in a statement (via Telegraph.com). “He remains in police custody and is helping officers with their enquiries.”
The Sun, which first reported the arrest, wrote that the girl in question is 15. Sky reports that Johnson is cooperating with authorities.
