Peyton Manning will return for his fourth season with the Denver Broncos, not that there was a lot of doubt about that.
But he’ll be doing something he has never done in all of his previous seasons: he’ll take a pay cut. Not that it’s any ordinary pay cut. Although Manning agreed to reduce his $19 million salary to $15 million, freeing up salary cap room for the team, he can recoup his losses by winning the Super Bowl. (Or getting more endorsement deals.)
“I don’t talk about my contract. I never have in 18 years and I’m not going to start now,” Manning said Wednesday afternoon (via ESPN’s Jeff Legwold and Chris Mortensen). “I’ve been working real hard and I’m excited to be back with the Denver Broncos. Can’t wait for April 13 to get here when the team can finally come together. I’m excited to get to work and get to know the new coaches and looking forward to trying to make 2015 a special year.”
Manning, who turns 39 on March 24 and finished last season hobbled by injuries, will have a physical Thursday, then sign the contract. His original deal with the Broncos specified that he would have a physical each year because of the multiple surgical procedures he has had on his neck.
Don’t worry too much about Manning clipping coupons. Incentives in the new contract would give Manning $2 million for winning the AFC championship and another $2 million for winning the Super Bowl, something he has done only once.
